IT was deja vu all over again for Brad Faxon.

Now he hopes it'll be once more with feeling.

Faxon eagled his final hole and shot a 64 for the second day in a row to take a five-stroke lead in the Sony Open going into today's third round at the Waialae Country Club.

His 36-hole total of 128 is five shots better than his five immediate challengers, including Ernie Els, the No. 2 player in the world, and Jim Furyk, who won the Mercedes Championships last week at Kapalua, Maui.

Joining Els and Furyk at 133 were Peter Jacobsen, who matched Faxon's 6-under 64 for the best round of the day, Tom Lehman, Carlos Franco and Bradley Hughes.

Seventy golfers survived the cut, which was 1-under-par 139. Among those who didn't survive the weekend were defending champion Paul Azinger, Steve Jones and 1990 Hawaiian Open champion David Ishii.

After starting his round with six straight pars, Faxon, who played the back nine first, finished birdie-birdie-eagle to pick up four quick strokes on the field.

Faxon hit a 4-wood to within six feet at the par-5 ninth. The gallery hardly applauded, so Faxon didn't realize how good a shot it was from 228 yards away.

Tough crowd.

"That's as good as I could have expected," said Faxon, who now has four eagles this year to match his entire 2000 output.

"I thought I'd see more guys climbing the (leader) board," Faxon said. "I didn't think 10 under would be leading."

Let alone 12 under.

Besides his eagle, Faxon thought a key hole for him was the 459-yard eighth hole. He sank a 40-foot putt for a birdie-3 there.

"I never thought it'd go in," he said.

It was Faxon's best showing at Waialae since he lost a playoff to Furyk in the 1996 Hawaiian Open.

"You've never done well here, have you?" a marshal at the fifth hole reminded Faxon, who missed the cut here last year.

Neither has Jacobsen, who's playing on a sponsor's exemption after finishing 181st on the money list last year -- his worst in 25 years on the PGA Tour.

Jacobsen, who represents the Waikoloa Resort, likes Waialae's new par-70 layout.

The first and 13th holes -- converted from par-5s to par-4s -- were 4 pars before, he said. "Now they're tough pars."

The only two par-5s now (nine and 18) are legitimate birdie chances. "You've got to jump on these two, which I did today," Jacobsen said.

Els birdied the final two holes for a 65 to put him position to challenge.

"I didn't make enough putts," said Els, who sank a 25-footer for eagle at the 18th hole.

Two bogeys -- a misjudged club at the par-3 seventh and a three-putt at No. 15 -- cost him a chance for a 63.

"Brad played really wonderful golf the first two days," Els said.

But he doesn't feel Faxon's lead is insurmountable.

A five-shot lead isn't much, Els said. "I've come back from more that that. We still have 36 holes to go."

That also keeps Furyk, who has had a first and second at Waialae, in the ball game.

John Daly, who shared the first-round lead with Faxon and Larry Mize, posted a 2-over-72 and was in a 10-way tie at 136.

Mize played his final nine 3-over to finish at 71 and was in another logjam at 135.
