Star-Bulletin triumphs at SPJ awards

The daily newspaper earns top honors in 10 categories in statewide competition

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 10 first-place awards while the Honolulu Advertiser took the top public service award and won seven other categories in the 2006 Excellence in Journalism Awards for Hawaii.

The Star-Bulletin's 10 awards were for: spot news, general news/enterprise, news page design, feature page design, news column writing, sports or features column writing, editorial opinion, editorial cartoon, informational graphic and news photography. The Star-Bulletin also took home 15 finalist awards.

The judges said the spot news reporting piece, "Earthquake Coverage: 15 seconds," was "an excellent job on Hawaii's biggest earthquake."

The Advertiser was honored with the top prize of SPJ's Hawaii chapter for its reporting on homelessness in Waianae.

Judges said it was a "thoughtful, comprehensive look at homelessness that really lets the subjects tell their stories in their own voices."

Besides the public service award, the Advertiser won in: business reporting, online spot reporting, online general news reporting, breaking news reporting, sports reporting, photo essay and investigative reporting. The paper also had 13 finalist awards.

The Maui News also had a strong showing among the daily newspapers at the ceremonies Friday night, winning in four categories -- feature writing short form, feature writing long form, feature photography and sports photography--along with five finalist awards.

Hawaii Business led the competition among magazines with four first-place awards.

KITV led first-place honorees in television news with six awards, while KHNL won the TV public service award for a story on autism. KGMB had two awards and KHON had one.

The contest has 52 categories, covering print, broadcast and online media. Judges, were from the Greater Oregon and Cincinnati chapters of the national journalism organization.
