NCAA Summer League opens tomorrow

The NCAA Summer Basketball League, featuring top college and high school players, opens its 28th season tomorrow with two games at the Manoa Recreation Center.

Honolulu Ford takes on Electricians Hawaii at 6 p.m. and Mango Moon meets Central Medical at 7:30 p.m.

Schuman, Loando take rodeo titles

Alex Schuman, a recent graduate of Maryknoll School, was the boys all-around champion and Kealakehe freshman Jaymie Loando the girls all-around champion at the State High School Rodeo Championships held at Parker Ranch on the Big Island.

Schuman's younger brother, Philip, a freshman at Maryknoll, won the bull riding, bareback bronc riding and cutting events en route to earning both the reserve champion title and the Rookie of the Year. Alex Schuman also won the scholar-athlete award.

Loando won the pole bending and barrel racing events, and was also named the Rookie of the Year. Jessica Higa, a sophomore at Kamehameha, won the goat tying and breakaway roping events and was named the reserve champion.

Lisa Rincon was named the female scholar-athlete and Chelsea Deever the state rodeo queen.

The top qualifiers advance to the National High School Rodeo Finals, July 19-25, at Gillette, Wyo. The largest rodeo in the world brings together 1,500 prep competitors from 42 states, Canada and Australia.

Ku'ikahi wins silver division volleyball

The Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club 18s won the silver division of the Southern California Volleyball Association's Junior Boys Classic at Anaheim, Calif., yesterday.

The Hawaii team outlasted Central Cal Gold, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13 in the championship match at the American Sports Center. Seeded 12th, they finished seventh overall out of 30 teams in the four-day tournament.

Team members are: Brandon Caban (Mililani), Nick Fujii (Hawaii Baptist), Kawika Lopez (Damien), Ainoa Miyashiro (Kamehameha), Jeremy McDown (Waimea), Corey Spence (Seabury Hall), Kyle Teves (Kealakehe) and Todd Blankenship, Mike Contee, B.J. Takushi and Tiff Wells (Iolani).

The team, coached by Teoni Obrey, next competes at the Junior Olympics, June 30-July 3, at Austin, Texas.

Waipio wins LL minors championship

Waipio defeated Hamakua, 9-1, to cap an undefeated run in the Little League Minors State Championship Tournament last Sunday at Lynch Field.

Waipio went 5-0 in the round-robin, six-team tournament for 9-10 year-olds.

Nicolas Ogasawara, Ryan Reyes and Kona Lenson combined on a one-hitter for Waipio.
