The Wahine were shut out in the Western Athletic Conference selections announced yesterday. Hawaii (15-12, 9-9 WAC) finished tied for fourth and are seeded fifth in this week's WAC tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
Wahine coach Vince Goo said he was most disappointed with the omission of senior Christen Roper from the all-defense team. Roper led the WAC in block average (3.33 bpg) and was fifth in rebounding average (7.7 rpg).
"But we don't vote for our own players," Goo said. "They picked five guards for the all-defensive team."
No. 6 Louisiana Tech (26-2, 18-0) picked up both awards for Player of the Year (Cheryl Ford) and Coach of the Year (Kurt Budke). It was the second Player of the Year honor for Ford, a senior center who is NBA star Karl Malone's daughter, and the first time there has been a repeat winner since Hawaii's Raylene Howard in 1999-2000.
Boise State forward Jamie Hawkins, among the WAC leaders in scoring and rebounding, was named Freshman of the Year.
Hawaii joined the WAC in 1997. The Wahine open tournament play Wednesday against Tulsa in the last quarterfinal of the day at the Reynolds Center (4:30 p.m. Hawaii time).
