Les Keiter is one of four people who will be inducted into the Washington Sports Hall of Fame. The other three are Bob Blackburn, Georg Meyers and Harry Missildine. Keiter headed to
Washington Hall of FameKeiter will be inducted at a ceremony on Sept. 5 at Safeco Field. It will be held at home plate before the start of the Tampa Bay-Seattle baseball game. An interview with Keiter will likely be shown on the Fox Sports Report.
Keiter currently works for Aloha Stadium. He has also served as announcer locally for KHON-TV (Channel 2).
Hula Bowl announces new partnership
Kaanapali Beach Resort Association will be the new host for the 2001 Hula Bowl that will include the college all-star football players, coaches, National Football League scouts and past Heisman Trophy winners."KBRA was very determined in its desire to host our groups and offered a great feeling of aloha to us as we build our bowl classic for the 21st century," Hula Bowl president Marcia Klompus said in a press release.
The new three-year deal was orchestrated by Shelley Kehuna, KBRA's director of marketing and Ed Sowers, who is the general manager of Westin Maui.
UH soccer Wahine to hold scrimmage
The University of Hawaii women's soccer team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage tomorrow at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium at 5 p.m. It is open to the public.The Wahine return 11 lettermen and seven starters from last year's squad that finished 5-12-3.
UH also boasts its best recruiting class ever, ranked 42nd nationally and ninth in the West region by Soccer Buzz magazine.
The Wahine open the regular season at home against Sacramento State. Admission is free.
Hawaii Babe Ruth team remains unbeaten
Hawaii finished 4-0 in the round robin phase of the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series held in New Jersey.The local team plays in today's semifinals. If the Oahu team wins, it will be in the championship game tomorrow morning.
Hawaii beat the Southeastern Regional Champion from Tallahassee, Fla., 11-8, yesterday. Michael Lam was 3-for-4 with a double and Kasey Ko and Landon Nakata hit home runs.
Justin Ariki had the game's biggest hit -- a three-run homer in the seventh.
Robert Kurisu picked up the win in relief.
In four games, Hawaii has outscored its opponents 46-13.
Kahakaloa Outrigger race set for Sunday
The annual Great Kahakaloa Challenge Long Distance Outrigger canoe race takes place this Sunday at Kahului Harbor. Some 24 crews are taking part in the race, which winds its way around Kahakaloa to Kaanapali. Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 0-for-3 with a strikeout batting seventh and playing left field in New York's 10-0 loss to Colorado. He left after seven innings in a double switch.Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate seemed like he might get a night off as Pittsburgh took a 5-0 lead into the ninth against Arizona ace Randy Johnson despite 16 strikeouts. But Pirates reliever Josias Manzanillo gave up a run, leading manager Lloyd McClendon to beckon Fetters with two on and two out.
He walked Luis Gonzalez to load the bases before retiring Mark Grace on a nubber in front of the plate to earn his fifth save of the season, fourth for the Pirates.
Chris Truby, Astros: Houston manager Larry Dierker saw fit to use two pinch hitters and a pinch runner in yesterday's 2-1, 11-inning win over Philadelphia, but the Damien graduate stayed on the bench.
