The mother of kidnapping and murder suspect Christopher Aki says she can never imagine that her only child would harm Kahealani Indreginal, a girl that Aki has known since she was born.

Patricia Aki said she and her son were neighbors of Kahealani and her family, until they moved to Kalihi Valley three years ago. Her son was to be married to Tanya Mamala-Tumbaga, Indreginal's older sister. They'd dated since intermediate school and have a baby boy together who will be one year old in two weeks.

"He (Christopher) adores her (Indreginal) and she adores him," Patricia Aki said. "That girl loves him that's why we're so shocked about this."

Aki said Indreginal was at their house for dinner on Monday. She said her son has never been violent.

She said she's always worried about the many bracelets Indreginal wore and that there have been other incidents where people have tried to steal them.

Aki said her son was questioned by police Friday morning and voluntarily went in again for questioning Friday afternoon. Police also took his car -- a 1998 blue Dodge Neon.

"It's a nightmare," she said. "We're in the dark. We don't know what is his place in this situation, how he is involved."

Christopher Aki had just quit his job at a motorcycle shop last month, his mother said. She said she didn't know if he was involved with drugs.

Aki said she confronted her son recently about having red, bloodshot eyes and he denied doing drugs.

"I said you can lie to me, but you can't lie to God."

Aki and her son attended a Pentecostal church in Red Hill regularly, although she said he had seemed to lose his faith recently.

"Chris is my only child, he's my heartbeat," she said. "I want him to know we love him unconditionally, as God loves us unconditionally."
