Dr. Colin Craig McCorriston developed a personal rapport with his patients, said son William Colin McCorriston.

Colin McCorriston delivered more than 10,000 babies, many of whom were named after him. One mother named her twins Colin and Craig, said William McCorriston.

McCorriston died yesterday at his Manoa home. He was 85.

McCorriston was born in Honolulu on Sept. 22, 1915. He practiced medicine at Straub Clinic & Hospital for 41 years as an obstetrics and gynecology specialist until he retired in December 1983. Moreover, he was once chief of staff of the obstetrics department at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

Three generations of some families were delivered by him, William McCorriston said.

Soon after he retired from Straub, McCorriston spent 17 years teaching at John A. Burns School of Medicine as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology until he retired last year.

He was a well-respected professor, said William McCorriston, and his students appreciated his teaching.

Colin McCorriston attended Punahou School and Stanford University. At 23 he finished medical school at Harvard. He later served in the U.S. Navy as a ship's physician aboard the USS Downs in the Pacific during World War II.

McCorriston was a former president of the Honolulu County Medical Society and the first member from Hawaii to be selected to join the Pacific Coast OB/GYN Society. He was also one of the founders of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1951.

McCorriston's family has spanned four generations in Hawaii, with ancestors first arriving in 1850. His father, Daniel McCorriston, was an executive with Theo H. Davies Co. His mother, Nina Grace Craig McCorriston, was a teacher at Honolulu High School (now McKinley High School).

He developed friendships with childhood buddies, patients and colleagues that lasted a lifetime, said William McCorriston. "He's just a loyal guy."

McCorriston is also survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Doyle McCorriston; sister Patricia Porter; four other children -- Frederick Craig, Catherine Petersmeyer, Dorothy Jane McCorriston and Betty Musgrave -- 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held at Central Union Church at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Colin McCorriston Scholarship fund, the John A. Burns School of Medicine or the Straub Foundation.
