HILO, >> Police are advising motorists to use extra caution on Highway 130 in Puna because of increased traffic with the opening of a new viewing area for lava flows going into the ocean in Kalapana.

Police estimate that the two-lane highway is now handling 400 more vehicles each day.

The access at the Kalapana end of the paved portion of Highway 130 was opened Friday and will be open daily from 2 to 8:30 p.m.

It allows visitors to hike less than 30 minutes before reaching the point where the lava from the Kilauea volcano pours into the ocean.

"We urge motorists to be aware of the increased traffic and to exercise greater caution when traveling the highway," said police Maj. David A. Kawauchi.
