WARRIOR REPLAY
Five big plays from Hawaii’s 45-7 loss at Oregon State
Chosen and described by the Star-Bulletin’s Dave Reardon
1. Good start
The Setup: Hawaii 0, Oregon State 0, 9:54 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Oregon State 31
The Play: Oregon State S Al Afalava is called for illegal contact above the shoulders against Hawaii SB Aaron Bain. The personal foul moves the ball to the Oregon State 16.
The Impact: The penalty fuels a six-play, 73-yard drive culminating in Kealoha Pilares' 16-yard touchdown run on the play after the foul.
Oregon State coach Mike Riley: "They were pretty fired up and we were on our heels."
2. Big return
The Setup: Hawaii 7, Oregon State 0, 3:45 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth and 2 at Hawaii 28
The Play: Sammie Stroughter returns Tim Grasso's 52-yard punt 43 yards to the Hawaii 37.
The Impact: Oregon State QB Lyle Moevao immediately passes to WR Shane Morales for a 25-yard gain, which sets up Jacquizz Rodgers' second-effort touchdown run of 3 yards to tie the game.
Moevao: "(Stroughter's return) was huge. That's the type of spark he brings to the team."
3. Taking the lead
The Setup: Oregon State 7, Hawaii 7, 14:16 remaining second quarter, Oregon State ball, third and 4 at Hawaii 8
The Play: Moevao fires a pass to Morales, who dives into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown, capping a 25-yard drive. Oregon State got the short field thanks to a Hawaii face-mask penalty on a punt.
The Impact: Stout Oregon State defense, poor field position and the big penalty add up to eventual trouble for Hawaii. Oregon State takes control of the scoreboard and never loses the momentum as things get worse for Hawaii.
Riley: "I thought the beautiful thing today was how our team responded after Hawaii scored the first touchdown and we just kept going."
4. Bad pass
The Setup: Oregon State 14, Hawaii 7, 4:08 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 2 at Oregon State 49
The Play: CB Keenan Lewis intercepts Graunke's pass after he tips it and it bounces off of LB Bryant Cornell.
The Impact: Probably the biggest play of the game. Oregon State takes over at its own 45. Moevao immediately passes to Morales for 24 yards, then hits Stroughter five plays later in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
Graunke: "It's just embarrassing, pretty much. They outplayed us today, but we've still got a long season ahead of us, so we have to keep our heads up."
5. Rout is on
The Setup: Oregon State 21, Hawaii 7, 14:40 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 10 at Hawaii 28
The Play: Cornell intercepts Graunke on the first series of the second half, setting up Rodgers' second touchdown of the game.
The Impact: Oregon State scores 24 unanswered second-half points and 45 in a row overall. Rodgers rushes for 110 yards, and Moevao finishes with three touchdown passes and one rushing. Hawaii backup quarterback Inoke Funaki is also intercepted once.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin: "I felt we did wear down and it's really surprising. I've conditioned this team more than any team I've ever coached, but we played tired. In the second half we were a tired football team."
