$8,860 in grants given to 7 nonprofits

The Hawaii Community Foundation's annual employee fundraiser, "Walk the Talk," donated $8,860 to seven nonprofit organizations, including:

Ma Ka Hana Ka 'Ike Building Program,* $2,000 for building materials for a hands-on program in Hana, Maui that teaches people how to use tools and also provides job experience; Jacqueline J.H. Bean Memorial Fund, $1,000 for the care and treatment of women with cancer; Poetry Slam Inc., Hawaii Slam, $900 for free after-school writing and performance workshops for teens;

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation, $1,250 for an in-patient comprehensive program for stroke victims, family and caregivers; Book Trust, $1,450 to buy books for low-income students at Paia Elementary School on Maui every month of the school year;

Ka Makana 'o Lili'uokalani (c/o Kaumakapili Church), $1,000 to assist Hawaiian orphaned children with tuition, new clothes and educational materials; and Affordable Housing and Homeless Alliance, $1,000 for monthly birthday parties for 97 children living in the Next Step Project, a homeless shelter in Kakaako.

The Agricultural Leadership Foundation of Hawaii has received $10,000 from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation in support of its fund development programs.
