Remember to file taxes by midnight tomorrow
Designated post offices across the state will offer late collections for those filing their federal tax returns at the last minute.
Deadline to file 2006 federal tax forms for those who did not request an extension from the IRS is by midnight Tuesday. Last-minute filers can drop off their mail at designated sites that have collection boxes with bright orange signs labeled "Tax Mail Drop-Final Pick-Up Midnight." Mail dropped off in the collection boxes will receive the April 17 postmark.
Retail windows at the Airport Post Office will stay open an extra hour -- until 9 p.m. -- to cater to customers who need to purchase stamps or special services. This year's deadline was pushed to Tuesday because the traditional deadline, April 15, fell on a Sunday. And today* is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday for Washington, D.C.
No curbside tax service
With about 60 percent of all federal tax returns expected to be filed electronically, the U.S. Postal Service is discontinuing curbside service for last-minute filers.
But don't despair. There will be blue collection boxes or a drop slot at various post offices across the state.
Those who are mailing their returns in the blue collection boxes or a drop slot at the post office should check the schedule for the last collection time of the day. With the exception of the bright orange-marked boxes at the designated locations, returns submitted after the last collection time will not receive April 17 postmarks.
