Kaiser uses 6-run inning to pull away for 10-1 win over McKinley
By Kyle Galdeira
Special to the Star-Bulletin
It took a few innings for Kaiser to get its offense going, but the bats eventually warmed up under the mid-day sun.
The Cougars used a six-run sixth inning to run away from the McKinley Tigers and claim a 10-1 victory yesterday afternoon in an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball game at McKinley High School.
Kaiser third baseman Colby Ho led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, five RBIs and one run scored. Ho rarely gets this opportunity, as most teams choose to pitch around him or intentionally walk him in fear of his offensive prowess.
"He has nine intentional walks so far," said Cougar head coach Peter Ho, Colby's father. "He was happy when they actually pitched to him."
Russel Sasaki earned the win for Kaiser (8-1 OIA East), after allowing just one run and three hits in a pre-determined three innings of work. Toby Inouye worked the final four innings in relief, giving up no runs and striking out four.
McKinley (4-5) got out to a 1-0 lead after starting pitcher Devin Okinaga, who reached base on a single, scored on catcher Andrew Mitani's sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cougars answered with three runs in the third inning, two of which were plated on the first of Ho's doubles. Scott Uehara also added an RBI single. The center fielder had four singles for the day, two of which came via the bunt, and scored twice.
"We had some clutch hits," Peter Ho said. "We came out ready to play today."
The Tigers kept the game within reach until the sixth inning, when a combination of walks, an error and timely hits by Kaiser put the game out of reach.
Jarryd Maeda and Bryce Marcouiller walked to start the inning. When Maeda attempted to advance to third on a ball in the dirt, Mitani launched the ball into left field, allowing Maeda to score while pinch runner Mason Masaki advanced to second. After a walk to Joseph Honma, an RBI single from Noel Okuma and an Uehara single, the bases were juiced for Ho.
The Cougar slugger proceeded to rope a line drive to deep right-center field, where the ball eventually ricocheted off a large tree and back toward the center fielder, good enough for a bases-clearing double. Pinch hitter Mathew Muranaka brought Ho home with a single to give Kaiser a 9-1 lead.
"For me, with full bases and one out, I needed to drive them in," Colby Ho said. "It's the best feeling as a batter."
Okinaga took the loss for McKinley after giving up six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Michael Estes worked the remainder of the game, allowing four runs and five hits.
The Cougars have one regular-season game remaining, and then will move on to postseason play in the OIA East tournament. Kaiser is in line for the No. 2 seed in the tournament behind Moanalua, also 8-1, which holds the tiebreaker after defeating the Cougars earlier in the season.
"We're looking forward to the postseason," Peter Ho said. "The thing is, if we're down, we know how to play to get back in the game. When we're up, if we can control the game and set the tempo, we'll be all right."
