HAWAII PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION
Star-Bulletin wins 13 Pa'i Awards
The newspaper takes first in four categories at the Hawaii contest
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 13 awards, including first place in four categories, in the Hawaii Publishers Association Pa'i Awards yesterday.
Winners in 35 categories were announced at the annual awards ceremony at Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Mainland judges selected winners in categories covering daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and trade publications.
The Star-Bulletin took first place for spot news photography, arts and entertainment writing, excellence in design and excellence in illustration (newsprint).
The Honolulu Advertiser won 26 awards*, ten for first place. The Maui News won first place awards for spot news, sports reporting and sports photography and a total of eight awards.
The Star-Bulletin's top winners were the following.
» Photographer FL "Larry" Morris won for a photo of injured children holding hands at the scene of a Kaimuki school bus crash. The judges wrote, "As difficult as it is to cover tragedy in a sensitive way, the photographer did just that. Without infringing on the private lives of two young students, he captured the moment. The photo speaks volumes."
» Style writer Nadine Kam won for a story on artist-sculptor John Koga. The judge wrote, "I enjoyed getting to know the subject of this article. He and the story's writer made me laugh, and yet the art John Koga creates is seriously interesting."
» Assistant Editor Mike Rovner's layout of stories and photos on the death of 26 Kaneohe Marines in an Iraq helicopter crash was described by judges as an "elegant, powerful portrayal of a community's tragedy. This page captures the overwhelming sense of sudden loss, both by the families involved and the community at large." Reporters Gregg Kakesako and Sally Apgar won third place in spot news reporting for stories on the tragedy.
» Artist Kip Aoki was awarded for excellence in illustration/newsprint for his drawing of Grammy-winning singer Norah Jones in the Weekend section. Judges said it was a "striking illustration, well executed and stylish, great use of subtle color and good character resemblance."

» The Honolulu Advertiser received 26 awards, including 10 first-place awards, in the Pa'i Awards contest. A story on Page A5 in the early edition yesterday gave a lower total -- it did not include all the awards won by the Advertiser's Custom Publishing Group and its Pacific Media Publishing.
