Huge North Shore surf
keeps lifeguards busy

It wasn't all fun and games on the North Shore yesterday. With closed beaches because of dangerous high surf, lifeguards stayed busy rescuing surfers. The final tally: 50 rescues, several broken surfboards, but no serious injuries. More of the same was expected today. Above, a lifeguard helped a surfer get to shore at Waimea Bay yesterday.

It seems the Super Bowl wasn't on everyone's agenda yesterday afternoon, as one-man canoe paddlers bobbed in the surf near Kaaawa.
