Raiders edge Saints
Kawika Shoji pumped in 23 points, and Iolani used clutch free-throw shooting to outlast Saint Louis 61-58 in overtime last night at McCabe Gym.
The Raiders improved to 6-1 in the tight Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball race. The Raiders (14-7 overall) were hot on the Crusaders' home floor, making eight of their 17 tries from 3-point range.
Saint Louis slipped to 4-3 in league play (9-3 overall) after a dogfight between the second- and third-ranked teams in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.
"Can it get any closer? And they miss forcing us into a second overtime by .1 of a second," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.
Saint Louis forward Cameron Bayne opened overtime with a tough, left-handed layup, but Iolani responded with a 9-2 run. Shoji's 3-pointer from the left wing gave the Raiders the lead for good, 54-53, with 1:20 left.
Jon Takamura and Shoji made foul shots to give Iolani a little breathing space at 56-53 with 42 seconds to play. Saint Louis' offense struggled, and Case Miyahira extended the Raiders' lead with four consecutive free throws. His last foul shot gave Iolani a 60-55 lead with 18 seconds left.
Scott Smith hustled after a miss by Jeremiah Masoli and converted on a three-point play to bring Saint Louis within 60-58 with 7.3 seconds remaining. The Crusaders fouled before the inbounds pass was made. Shoji hit only one of two free-throw tries, giving Saint Louis a break.
Masoli missed a 23-footer before Bayne tracked down the rebound and heaved a 25-foot prayer from the top. His shot was all net, but officials ruled the shot came after time expired.
Miyahira came through with 15 points off the bench, including two 3-pointers. He made all seven of his free-throw attempts, including four in overtime. Vinny Nip added 11 points, including two treys.
"Usually, in the tough situations, we tend to come through," Miyahira said.
The 5-foot-11 junior shoots as many as 150 free throws a day on his own time. His accuracy at the line comes with a simple mental approach, especially under pressure.
"There's usually nothing going on in my head except making baskets," he said.
Shoji, a 6-4 senior, was superb. He drilled four treys in five attempts. He also grabbed five rebounds.
The four-time defending state champion Raiders get a short respite before visiting Punahou on Friday.
Bayne led Saint Louis with 20 points. Smith, a 6-6 senior, anchored the Crusaders in the key with 12 points and seven boards. Masoli added nine points, but struggled with 4-for-14 shooting and six turnovers from the point guard spot.
Iolani shot just 39 percent from the field (16-for-41), but made up for it with 78 percent accuracy at the foul line (21-for-27). Saint Louis shot 49 percent from the field (22-for-45) but had key misses at the charity stripe. The Crusaders finished at 59 percent from the line (10-for-17).
"We didn't play very smart when we had the lead. We allowed them chances to get back in the game," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "Both teams played hard."

Campbell, Kapolei and rain prevail
Part of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I softball playoff bracket was scheduled to be played today after rain canceled two first-round games yesterday.
Nanakuli (1-11) was slated to visit Moanalua (8-4) and Roosevelt (3-9) to travel to Leilehua (6-6) at 3:30 p.m. today after both games were rained out yesterday.
The other two first-round games were completed yesterday. Campbell defeated host Kaimuki 4-0 and two-time defending champion Kapolei beat visiting Kahuku 12-2 in five innings.
The Red Raiders finished their season at 2-11, and the Bulldogs ended up 7-6.
In regularly scheduled quarterfinal games today, Mililani (11-1) was to host Campbell (7-6) and Kapolei (8-5) to visit Kailua (10-2), both starting at 3:30 p.m.
The championship game is Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Also, the Division II semifinals start tomorrow with No. 4 McKinley playing at top-seed Kalaheo and No. 2 Waipahu hosting No. 3 Aiea. The final is Friday at the school field of the remaining higher seed.
