Martin Luther King Jr. events planned

The Hawaii chapter of the NAACP, along with several other organizations, plans a trio of events to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The events will be held the weekend before the holiday, which is observed on Jan. 16*.
» On Jan. 13, noon to 1:30 p.m., "The Civil Rights Movement Post Rosa Parks," a free forum of several professors from mainland schools speaking at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Richardson School of Law in Classroom 2. Parking is available at the Dole structure for $3.
» On Jan. 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m., the third annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Gala Dinner Dance will be held at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel. It will begin with a silent auction, followed by dinner and dancing.
The cost is $50 per person and $500 for a table for 10. Donations are also accepted for "Freedom Fund" tables of 10 at $1,250. Proceeds benefit the local chapter of the NAACP.
» On Jan. 15, 3:30 to 6 p.m., the NAACP Youth and College Leadership Workshop, in which prospective members receive formal training, will be held at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 3950 Payne Circle, near the airport.
