West Oahu pounds Idaho in regional

Vonn Feao hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to help West Oahu beat Idaho 16-5 via the mercy rule in the Little League Northwest Regional Tournament at San Bernardino, Calif., yesterday.

Feao finished the game with two home runs and six RBIs in support of pitcher Kini Enos, who scattered seven hits and four walks for the complete-game victory.

West Oahu plays Montana tomorrow and Alaska on Thursday before the semifinals begin Saturday.

Hawaii Pacific No. 8 in preseason poll

The Hawaii Pacific volleyball squad jumped five spots in the offseason, coming in at No. 8 on the CSTV/AVCA NCAA Div. II preseason coaches poll yesterday.

The Sea Warriors ended last season with a 21-4 record and a No. 13 ranking. Chaminade is ranked No. 20 after finishing last season No. 19 with a 17-7 record.

Nebraska-Kearney received 15 first-place votes for the top spot in the poll, followed by Truman and defending national champion Barry. Barry received 13 first-place votes and Truman only got six.

UH's Schlanger swims to fourth

Hawaii swimmer Melanie Schlanger finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle event of the ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships at Irvine, Calif., on Sunday.

Schlanger posted a time of 25.88 seconds in the race, which was won by Amanda Weir in 25.45 seconds.

Lajola rolling in USTA championships

Dennis Lajola of Aiea faces Ryan Smith in the fourth round of the boys 18 singles bracket today at the USTA National Tennis Championships at Kalamazoo, Mich., after sweeping Nick Plum 6-2, 6-1 yesterday.

Lajola is in the third round of the doubles tournament with Nathaniel Schnugg of Medford, Ore.

Holden Ching of Kamuela was swept 6-3, 6-2 by No. 16 Gary Sacks in the third round of the boys 18 singles tournament.

Colin Fujishige of Kaneohe made it to the third round of the boys 16 singles tournament before losing to Arsenio Culver 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6 (3). Fujishige and Skyler Tateishi of Kailua are still alive in the doubles tournament after winning by walkover yesterday. Tateishi fell in the second round of the singles draw.

Morrison, Mitchell tied in club pro qualifier

Mark Morrison of Swing & Play the Easy Way and Tim Mitchell of Wailea Golf Club shot even par at Puakea Golf Course to share the lead after the first round of the PGA Club Pro Championship yesterday.

The final round is scheduled for today and the top three finishers advance to the national tournament next year at Verona, N.Y.
