Isle District Teachers
of the Year selected
Seven public school teachers have been selected as Hawaii's 2006 District Teachers of the Year.
Each is a contender for State Teacher of the Year; the winner will be announced at the Board of Education's Sept. 1 meeting.
The following are the winners by district:
» Honolulu: Colleen Uejo, Linapuni Elementary School. Uejo teaches special education at the preschool level.
» Central Oahu: Joanne Fujita-Oshiro, Helemano Elementary School. Fujita-Oshiro, who began teaching in 1990, teaches first grade.
» Leeward Oahu: Stacy Makanoe Kawasaki, Waiau Elementary School. She is a first-grade teacher and has also taught kindergarten and grade 6. She began substitute teaching in 1994.
» Windward Oahu: Evelyn Oshima, Puohala Elementary School. Oshima began her teaching career in 1971, teaching at six public schools, from kindergarten through grade 3, since then.
» Hawaii: Sheri Kojima, Waiakea High School. Kojima teaches business education in grades 9 to 12. She formerly taught the subject at Hilo and Laupahoehoe high schools, and began teaching in 1991.
» Maui: Linda Yonemura, Molokai High School. Yonemura has been teaching business education at Molokai High School her entire teaching career, which began in 1975.
» Kauai: Ryne Terao, Kapaa Middle School. Terao teaches career and technical education to seventh- and eighth-graders. He has also served as a district resource teacher.
