Hawaii kids make USA Surf Team

Five Hawaii surfers were chosen yesterday for the USA Surf Team that will represent the country at the World Junior Championships in Huntington Beach, Calif., in October.

They are: Kevin Sullivan (open men), Sebastian Zietz (boys under 18), Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton (girls under 18) and Kai Barger (boys under 16).

Barger won the boys under-16 championship at the Surfing America USA Championships yesterday at Huntington Beach.

Two other Hawaii surfers won USA titles yesterday -- Dusty Payne in open men and Kyle Ramey in boys under 18.

Island Movers tie Kyushu Big Six

The Hawaii Island Movers tied the Kyushu Big Six All-Stars 5-5 on Friday in a baseball game in Japan.

Matt Alling went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Movers.

UK Pro Soccer Clinic at Waipio in August

Professional soccer coaches from England are running a clinic for Hawaii's U-10 through U-18 players.

The clinic is Aug. 8-13 for 2 1/2 hours each day.

Austin Speight is the head instructor.

The registration fee is $180 for individuals and $2,700 for teams.

Vulcan Hall of Fame nomination forms available

Nomination forms for the 14th Annual City Bank/Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame induction are available by calling the Hawaii-Hilo athletic office at (808) 974-7606.

To qualify as an athlete inductee, nominees must have completed their eligibility at UH-Hilo before the spring 2000 season.

Community member, coaches and administrators may also be nominated, but can't be inducted while still associated with UHH athletics in a paid capacity.
