WAC honors 31 UH athletes for academics

Four-time Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honorees Justine Boutet, Kimberly Curtis, Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor of the Hawaii women's tennis team led 31 from UH honored by the WAC yesterday for academic prowess.

The WAC released its academic all-conference honorees in spring sports and for freshman/transfer players in all sports. To be eligible, student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have played in at least half of their team's games.

UH spring sports honorees included Greg Kish and Rich Olsen (baseball); Dale Gammie, Sara Odelius and Megan Stoddart (women's golf); Noelle Izumi (softball); Bryon Weinberg (men's tennis); Kana Aikawa, Boutet, Curtis, Fitzgerald and Mainor (women's tennis); and Dana Buchanan, Sharlene Carillo, Alexis Fredrick, Patricia Gauthier, Ashley Monfort and Jessica Rohr (women's outdoor track and field).

Freshman and transfer students honored for academic work in their first year at UH include Sabrina Reeve (women's cross country); Landon Kafentzis and Ryan Keomaka (football); Jessica Domingo (women's soccer); Louise Harriden (softball); Carly Mitchell, Joy Symons and Rui Wang (women's swimming and diving); Bianca DeBartolo, Chantelle Laan and Reeve (women's track and field); and Tara Hittle and Victoria Prince (women's volleyball).

Tinman registration second deadline today

Today is the second entry deadline for the 25th annual Tinman Triathlon. Contestants can enter through today for $100 before the entry fee then increases to $110 until July 13.

The Tinman Triathlon is July 16. Entry forms are at most running and bike stores and in Athletes Hawaii magazine. Registration can also be completed online at Active.com. For information, go to www.tinmanhawaii.com.

Junior golf programs starting

Junior golf summer programs for Hawaii youth are offered at 27 courses on four islands.

Clinics, classes and golf-related activities vary by course for golfers as young as 5. Some are offered year-round.

The courses on Oahu: Ala Wai (654-4531); Coral Creek (441-4653); Hawaii Kai (395-2358); Hawaii Prince (944-4567); Hickam/Mamala Bay (449-8048); Honolulu (441-9453); Kaneohe Klipper (254-1745); Koolau (236-4653); Ko Olina (676-5300); Mid-Pacific (261-9765); Oahu (595-3256); Turtle Bay (293-8574); and West Loch (680-0006).

Darainbow.com flag football needs teams

Registration is open for the www.darainbow.com Hawaii Flag Football League's fall season.

The 10-game minimum league starts play in September, with games held at Halawa District Park. The registration fee is $275 for 4-on-4, plus a $100 deposit for forfeit and missed-meeting fines. The cost includes player medical insurance.
