Rainbow Wahine place fourth in MPSF tourney

USC jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back in a 12-6 victory over Hawaii in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament third-place game.

Hawaii's Iefke Van Belkum scored five goals in the loss, and the fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine (20-9) finished fourth in the tournament.

The Trojans (23-4) earned third place.

Hawaii has a chance at a berth to the NCAA Championship and awaits today's announcement of at-large teams.

Two Vulcans named all-academic

Hawaii-Hilo baseball players John Matson and Tyler Usui were named to the Division I Independent All-Academic Team.

Matson, a senior from Bellevue, Wash., is a communications major with a 3.35 grade-point average. Usui, a junior from Hilo, has a 3.54 GPA in political science. The Vulcans finished the season 6-34.

Twenty-seven players from 16 schools were named to the list.

Sports tourism discussion this week

A panel discussion on the future of sports tourism in Hawaii is scheduled for the Hawaii Prince Hotel on Thursday.

Registration is at 11:30 a.m. with the discussion starting at noon. The fee is $30 for Travel and Tourism Research Association Hawaii Chapter members or students and $36 for nonmembers.

Panelists are: Michael Story, the new events manager for the Hawaii Tourism Authority; Michele Nagamine, the director of sports marketing and sales at Outrigger Hotels and Resorts; Tom Kiely, the chief executive officer of Xterra, an off-road triathlon each year on Maui; and Wanda Kakugawa, the president of Market Trends Pacific.
