Man is charged in shooting
at Kalihi Valley Park
Police have charged 28-year-old Jonathan Soriano in connection with a shooting at Kalihi Valley Park earlier this month that sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.
Soriano was arrested Tuesday at a Kalihi restaurant in connection with the April 18 shooting along Piliwai Street that injured Calvin Tinao, 46.
Tinao was shot three times, twice in the back and once in the buttocks, following an argument. Police said the suspect fired about nine to 10 times at Tinao and an acquaintance who was in a car nearby.
According to court documents, the acquaintance, who had driven Tinao to Piliwai Street, walked into the Kalihi Police Station that same day and told police he had witnessed the shooting.
He told police there were three males sitting inside a Mitsubishi Lancer parked at the dead end of Piliwai Street, two of whom he recognized, including Soriano, who was sitting in the back seat. He said Tinao got out and was arguing with the front passenger in the Mitsubishi when Soriano opened the rear passenger door and fired several times at Tinao.
Tinao's friend said that as he drove away, he heard more gunshots and that his car was struck several times on the driver's side. Evidence specialists later confirmed his car had been struck five times, with one of the bullets embedded near the inside door handle.
Had the bullet continued its path, there would have been a high probability that the driver would have been struck in the torso, police noted.
Soriano was charged with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and firearm and drug offenses. When he was arrested, police recovered a glass pipe with residue that resembled crystal methamphetamine and a plastic packet containing a crystal-like substance.
Bail has been set at $100,000. Soriano is expected to make an initial appearance today in Honolulu District Court.
