OUR PICKS THIS WEEKEND
Nadine sez ...Short attention span eaterFor those who wondered whatever happened to Capt. Steve Shiraishi of Haleiwa Smokehouse, he's been laying low while setting up his newest enterprise, a new Kalihi facility that will enable him to ship his ono delicacies nationwide. But you can say you tried it all first. This month and next, he's bringing his smoked fillets of ahi, opah, swordfish, salmon and ono to various Foodland and Daiei locations. If you're lucky, he may even have some of his delicious ginger-brined medallions of succulent and supple scallops, that are great for chopping into salads or swallowing whole -- but don't do that because you'll miss out on the flavor. Almost like candy! Where and when: All times 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday at Foodland Beretania, May 7 at Daiei Kaheka, May 14 at Daiei Kaheka, and May 21 at Foodland Beretania Price: About $5.50 per quarter pound; slightly more for scallops
Joleen sez ...Whatever your feelings about Spam, you have to admire the way it has wormed its way into our world. Pay tribute at the Waikiki Spam Jam street fair, 4 to 10 a.m. Saturday on Kalakaua Avenue between Seaside Avenue and the Moana Surfrider. Even if you don't eat the Spam food, enjoy free music by the likes of Sean Na'auao and lots of other irreverent stuff.
Betty sez ...The anti-Spam event would be the Hawaii State Culinary Expo happening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Kapiolani Community College. You'll be amazed at what works of art can be created out of edible substances. And if that's too frou-frou for you, there will be regular food for eating and just-for-fun competitions such as a waiter relay obstacle course. Tickets are $10 and include $3 worth of scrip for food.
John sez ...Take in "Life," opening Friday at the E&O Trading Company in Ward Centre. Promoters Giorgio Taye and Grant Mitchell Fukuda have joined forces to present the first club party in that spacious new restaurant. The decor is Asian, and the music will be provided by the Stone Groove Family. And there'll be no cover on opening night for those 21 and over. Doors open at 10 p.m. This one should rock!
