EIS for ferry could affect other ships, too

What if the environmental impact statement for the proposed Superferry finds that ships with propellers can no longer be allowed in island harbors or on seas between the islands, or for some other reason not revealed before?

Ocean liners will have to wait outside while we meet them with rowboats, and how will we get food and other products from container ships and tankers?

Requiring an EIS for the ferry is silly. It will reveal nothing not already long known to be guarded against. Its only accomplishment will be to kill the ferry project.

It raises suspicion that it is being instigated by competitors.

Christians also should oppose death penalty

I hope that biblical Christians like Clifford Ishii (Letters, April 5) are standing at the front lines to loudly protest whenever a person is sentenced to death by our judicial system.

I have to think that they will, otherwise their "culture of life" is seriously undermined by hypocrisy. He makes it a point to iterate that it was an innocent life (Terri Schiavo's) being taken. The number of people on Death Row who are exonerated is something to make you doubt the most final judgment one man can make on another.

The United States is known as barbaric because we continue to use the death penalty, while the majority of the Western world has rejected it.

There have been many alliances between Christians and others who do not believe in the death penalty. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Impeach Bush for his 'accomplishments'

When President Bush proclaimed "Mission Accomplished" about two years ago (May 2, 2003), was he predicting that with his experience and expertise in the energy business, that the price of oil would move from about $26 to $57 per barrel in 24 months? If so, this is one time where Bush knew what he was talking about.

Since Bush failed in the mission to find Osama bin Laden, WMD and end the war, what was this former oil company executive talking about, other than corporate revenue enhancement?

To achieve this profit, did Bush deceive us and rationalize as collateral damage the deaths of more than 1,500 U.S. troops and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians?

Don't you think this is closer to an impeachable offense than Bill Clinton's foolish Lewinsky affair? If so, your congressional representatives are waiting to hear from you!

America's trust Bush did breach; it's our patriotic duty to impeach!

Kapolei bridge would ease Leeward traffic

When I was growing up on Oahu, the population was about 500,000. No superhighways and obviously there weren't a lot of cars on the road, and traffic was just fine during those years.

Today our population has more than doubled. More people are moving to Hawaii from the mainland, Pacific islands, Asia and other foreign countries.

Our Democratic-controlled congressional team and Democratic-controlled Legislature need to understand that we need population control. Redesigning traffic routes and building a rail transit are only temporary remedies.

Other than that, my suggestion is building a bridge (similar to the San Francisco bridge) across Pearl Harbor to Kalaeloa or Kapolei to relieve the Leeward-bound traffic both ways.
