Cost of mayor’s
race up in 2004
Post-election campaign expenditures pushed spending by Mufi Hannemann, Duke Bainum and Frank Fasi in last year's Honolulu mayoral race over $7 million, nearly double the amount spent by the major candidates in the previous election.
Bainum spent $4.1 million in his unsuccessful bid for the city's top job, according to his year-end report to the state Campaign Spending Commission. Winner Mufi Hannemann spent nearly $2.3 million, while former Frank Fasi spent $786,181.
In 2000, incumbent Mayor Jeremy Harris, Hannemann and Fasi combined to spend $3.9 million.
Bainum spent $84,146 from Nov. 3 to Dec. 31, most of it for professional services and advertising. He loaned his campaign another $70,000 in November. Bainum financed more than half of the cost of his campaign through personal loans totaling $2,805,863.
Hannemann spent $13,499 in the last two months of 2004 for advertising, printing, miscellaneous expenses and to pay off some unpaid debts. He loaned his campaign $220,000.
Fasi had no year-end expenditures. He financed the entire cost of his campaign through personal loans.
