The Oshizuchi Roll for the Cure from Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar is being sold this week to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Hawaii affiliate.


Sansei sushi helps breast cancer group

A special sushi roll tied with a pink ribbon is Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar's way of honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The sushi is being sold through Saturday at Sansei's newest location, in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Hawaii affiliate.

The Oshizuchi Roll for the Cure ($6.95) was created by sushi chef Robby Miyashiro in the oshizuchi, or pressed-sushi, style that originated in Osaka. Oshizuchi is traditionally made with saba or mackerel pressed into a rectangle in a wooden box. Sansei's version comprises New Zealand king salmon, a slice of grilled eggplant, shredded carrots and a mixture of spinach, edamame and shiso leaf, layered with rice and served with a miso glaze.

The offer ends the day before the Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure at Kapiolani Park.

Farm fresh

Chef Roy Yamaguchi hosts his annual fund-raising dinner for the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25 at Roy's Hawaii Kai.

Yamaguchi will headline a group of chefs working 14 cooking stations showcasing locally grown produce. Specialty wines have been selected to pair with the dishes.

Tickets are $125, to benefit the farm bureau's programs supporting local agriculture.

A Benihana buffet

The buffet, with its food pre-made and set out for self-service, seems a contradiction to Japanese teppanyaki cooking, where a chef "performs" for small groups, grilling up individual portions to order.

But Benihana of Tokyo in the Hilton Hawaiian Village is combining the two approaches in a teppanyaki lunch buffet. The showy chefs prepare sukiyaki in teppanyaki style, the difference being that guests walk the buffet line.

The menu also includes cold shabu shabu, hand-roll sushi and such local favorites as vegetable curry, barbecue chicken, kalua pig and salt-and-pepper chicken.

Cost is $15.95, $7.50 for children. Buffet hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 955-5955.

Kind to kids

Tiki's Grill & Bar has been named to a list of five top family-friendly restaurants by Coca-Cola's Family Diner program.

Two other chain restaurants represented in Hawaii -- Ruby Tuesday and Denny's -- are also on the list, but Tiki's is the only independent restaurant named.

The Friendly's and Noodles & Company chains round out the list.

Family Diner is supported by the National Restaurant Association to encourage families to eat out.

The program asked restaurants to list ways they market to families. Tiki's was recognized for its South Pacific theme decor and keiki menu. The restaurant estimates that it serves 1,000 to 1,200 children's meals each month.
