Kaneohe Marines
are in Kuwait

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit with 1,000 Kaneohe Marines arrived in Kuwait Sept. 10 for desert training, after four weeks at sea.

About 2,000 Marines with the 31st MEU, including 900 members of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, from Kaneohe Bay, who deployed from Okinawa in July, arrived in the Northern Persian Gulf a week ago aboard ships of the USS Essex Amphibious Ready Group. Also part of the 31st MEU as the aviation section are 70 Marines assigned to Medium Helicopter Squadron 463 and six CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters from Kaneohe.

Schofield Barracks' Tropic Lightning Museum will have a "living history day" on Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibits will include a historical weapons and insignia display by members of the Hawaii Historic Arms Association, vintage military vehicles by the Hawaii Military Vehicle Preservation Association, as well as museum exhibits about the history of Schofield Barracks and the 25th Infantry Division. Entertainment will be provided by an ensemble from the 25th Division band. Admission is free. Call 655-0438 for more information.

Lt. Courtney Minetree, who until August was assigned the frigate USS Crommelin, has won the Capt. Joy Bright Hancock Leadership Award. The award is presented annually to two women -- one officer and one enlisted sailor -- from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Minetree is attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., studying for a master's degree in undersea warfare.

Four Civil Air Patrol pilots -- Lt. Col. Tom Brehm, Capt. John Gleeson, Capt. Tom Moss and 1st Lt. Gib Hatter -- delivered books on aviation donated by local pilots to Molokai Intermediate and High School last month. The four flew to Molokai on Aug. 27 using Civil Air Patrol planes and wanted to get the materials there before school started on Sept. 2.

Gleeson said the books on aviation were donated by pilots Robert Carney, first officer with Hawaiian Airlines; Don Meir; Frank Baker; retired Air Force Col. W.M. Schauer; and Gleeson.

Gleeson said the pilots hope that because of the books youngsters on Molokai "will become aware of the many opportunities available in the field of aviation."
