Summer delights from
around the world

Just in time for summer, here are a few classic wine values from the wine regions of the world.

Fondly known as "Grandma's wine" by the R. Field Wine Co. staff, moscato d'asti is the Italian thirst-quencher well-suited to Hawaiian- "summer daze."

Intoxicatingly aromatic, with scents of lychee, pikake and peaches, this medium-sweet, mildly bubbly wine is low in alcohol (5 to 7 percent) and perfect for lounging around on a lazy afternoon.

Our most popular brands are Cascinetta ($11.99), Piazzo ($14.99) and Forteto della Luja, Moscato d'Asti ($10.99).

Everyone knows white zinfandel is good, but many are discovering that riesling is better. One of my favorite estates is Gysler's Weinheimer Holle Kabinett 2002 from the Rheinhessen region of Germany.

With so many to choose from, why Gysler? First, Alexander Gysler a stellar young winemaker with a heritage going back 500-plus years. With only three vintages under his belt, he is gaining critical acclaim. Second, the exceptional 2002 vintage is not to be missed (finest since the '40s).

The Rheinhessen region is outstanding (check out Kunstler Estate if you don't believe me) and Gysler's key is a volcanic soil base approaching 30 million years of age -- now that's real terrior!

The result is a slightly sweet, intense, lip-smacking juicy taste sensation -- just like biting into a crisp, juicy Braeburn apple. Best of all is the price for this amazing wine -- just $7.99! You can bet a case of this is in my wine cellar!

Finally, off the boat from Spain, Sierra Cantabria's Rioja 2002 ($8.79) is great! Made from the classic tempranillo grape, this elegant red has rich, sweet, cherry fruit with juicy hints of cranberry and plums. Not a tutti-frutti style of Rioja, but clean and fresh with "old school" character.

For those of you who have tried its siblings, Codice and Protocolo (the latter which is sold out!) you won't be disappointed. With its supple texture and layered fruit, it is ideal for salami, meats and full-flavored seafood right off the grill.
