Kono finishes fourth at Junior PGA

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono shot a 3-over 74 yesterday to end the Westfield Junior PGA championship in fourth (70-75-73-74--292). The Punahou freshman started the day seven strokes behind leader and eventual winner Angela Park of Torrance, Calif. Park was pretty much untouchable on the last day, firing a 5-under 66 to beat Jennie Lee (287) by 10 shots.

Kelly Nakashima of Wailuku ended in ninth. Nakashima (302) shot a 1-under 70 on the final day to move up nine spots in the final standings.

Kim, Chun, Corpuz win at Junior World Championships: Kimberly Kim of Pahoa won the 11- to 12-year-old division on Friday at the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships. Kim finished at 2-under 184 at the Welk Resort's Fountain Course to win the division by three strokes.

Also winning her division was Kamehameha junior Mari Chun (15- to 17-year-olds). Chun finished at 9-under 287 at the Torrey Pines North Course to beat Colombia's Juliana Murcia by a single stroke. Allisen Corpuz (41-over 203) beat out four other girls in the 6-and-under division.

On the boys side, Lihue's Alan Baab (6-over 294) finished 10th in the 15- to 17-year-old division while Bradley Shigezawa tied for 14th in the 11- to 12-year-old division.

USA loses to China at World Grand Prix

Former University of Hawaii standout Heather Bown scored nine points yesterday as the USA women's volleyball team lost in five games to China at the FIVB World Grand Prix.

Bown had two blocks and seven kills as China rallied to defeat the U.S. 20-25, 28-26, 16-25, 25-20, 15-9. Outside hitter Logan Tom, whose father, Mel, is from the Big Island, led the U.S. with 30 points (29 kills, one ace).

Scott loses in beach volleyball semifinals: Former Hawaii volleyball player Sean Scott and partner Todd Rogers lost in the semifinals of the FIVB World Series 13 in Marseille, France, yesterday. Switzerland's Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel beat Scott and Rogers 21-16, 21-19 to reach today's championship.

Winnetou wins 13th West Marine Pacific Cup

After weeks of racing and a few days of handicap calculations and protests, Winnetou of San Francisco was declared the overall winner of the 13th West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe. The Santa Cruz 52 also won its division (E).

Ghost and First Light, both representing the Kaneohe Yacht Club, topped the A division.

Two other Hawaii vessels finished second in their respective divisions. Ikaika (Division B) of the Waikiki Yacht Club and Surprise (Division D) of Kaneohe helped Hawaii make a solid showing in the race.

Withy-Allen, Rose to speak at Quarterback Club

Islanders quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen and former Harvard quarterback Neil Rose are among the guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting.

State Sen. Bob Hogue, who is also a sports broadcaster, is a guest speaker as well.

The club's sportspersons of the month are Cal State Fullerton baseball standout Kurt Suzuki and Tracie Uchima of the University of Hawaii softball team.

The meeting at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom starts at 11:30 a.m..
