» Mike Fetters (Iolani) took the mound in the major leagues for the first time in 19 months Friday, giving up a run in one inning for the Diamondbacks. He had pitched in seven games in Triple-A Tucson following elbow surgery last year.
He spent the time off as an assistant basketball coach for a nearby high school. He thought his career might be finished.
"I just went out there. ... I thought I'd hit a few guys, be all over the place. But I actually threw strikes, got some people out, got better and better. I think I'm ready," Fetters, 39, told the Arizona Republic about Tucson, where he earned a save and struck out 10 batters while walking only two in eight innings.
» Benny Agbayani (Saint Louis, Hawaii Pacific) went through the first half of the season in Japan without missing a game. So far, it is the first year he has not been on the disabled list since 2000, when he appeared in 119 games for the New York Mets.
» Chris Truby (Damien) is trying to make his return to the major leagues as a utility infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Truby has started at all four infield positions for the Sounds and leads the team in hitting, runs scored, home runs and RBIs.
» Dane Sardinha (Kamehameha) was a goat of sorts in the Triple-A All Star game on ESPN, allowing the Pacific Coast League's Calvin Pickering to score on a passed ball in the ninth inning. Pickering's score tied the game and sent it to extra innings, where the PCL won 3-2.
» Justin Wayne (Punahou) has been mentioned as a possibility to take Josh Beckett's spot in the Florida Marlins' rotation Tuesday. Wayne has made five starts for Triple-A Albuquerque and would be right on schedule for another start on that day.
» Third baseman Bronson Sardinha (Kamehameha) seems to be heating up as his name gets mentioned in a possible deal between the Yankees and Diamondbacks for Randy Johnson. Sardinha hit three home runs in the past week. Don't tell Yankees pitcher KevinBrown about Sardinha's bat, though, as the Kamehameha graduate committed an error in Brown's rehab start to collar the pitcher with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Brown ended up giving up four runs. Sardinha made up for it with a dinger in the fifth inning after Brown was long gone.
» Brandon League (Saint Louis) showed off his skills at the Eastern League All-Star Game, needing only seven pitches to complete a scoreless inning and earning a standing ovation when one of his offerings hit 102 mph on the stadium radar gun, according to the New York Times.
» The Burlington Bees were short a couple of players in the late innings of a loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday. In the fourth inning, catcher Adam Donachie was struck by a practice swing from Kila Kaaihue (Iolani), who was in the on-deck circle. Donachie had to be replaced as the first-base coach and did not appear in the game and the distraught Kaaihue left the game an inning later.
» Jason Kahi Kaanoi (Kamehameha) earned his first win as a starting pitcher last week, throwing five innings and giving up only one run against the Clinton Lumberkings. Kaanoi has appeared in 22 games this year, but made only four starts. He has three saves.
» Patrick Scalabrini (Hawaii) has been invited to participate in the Northern League's home-run derby tomorrow in Joliet, Ill. Scalabrini has hit nine dingers this year and will play in the independent league's All-Star Game as well.
