City wastewater official Harry K. Hauck III pleaded not guilty yesterday in Circuit Court to charges of second-degree theft and bribery stemming from work employees were made to perform on city time using city resources.
Hauck, a Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant supervisor, was indicted last week along with supervisor Jay S. Gonsalves, stemming from an incident between July and August 2001.
Several employees from the Kailua plant filed a lawsuit in June 2002 against Hauck, Gonsalves and other waste-water officials over alleged abuses of overtime and city resources.
In one instance, truck drivers Solomon Silva and Norman Salsedo alleged that they were made to install or repair a water sprinkler system on two consecutive weekends at the Enchanted Lake home of Gonsalves' mother while on city overtime and using supplies from the city storeroom. Hauck is charged with bribing Silva and Salsedo.
Hauck and his attorney, Rodney Ching, declined to comment on the charges.
Hauck is free in lieu of $3,000 bail. Trial was set for the week of Sept. 13. Gonsalves is awaiting arraignment.
