P.O.W. tale revisited
The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Kazuo Sakamaki, a skipper of a Japanese mini-sub, was captured on an Oahu beach and brought to the makeshift Sand Island internment camp.
Writer Patsy Sumie Saiki wants to shed light on the little-known story of the first prisoner of war during a free event taking place 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, fifth floor.
"People don't know much about the first Hawaii prisoner of World War II and the affect the Hawaii internees had on him," said Saiki, a retired teacher and author of "Ganbare! An Example of Japanese Spirit," who writes about Japanese immigrant life.
"Being incarcerated with the Hawaii internees had a very positive affect on (Sakamaki's) life," said Saiki, whose reprinted book will be available the day of the event for $13.50 (regular $16.61 with tax).
The event is part of a summer series related to the exhibit, "Dark Clouds Over Paradise: The Hawai'i Internees Story," in the JCCH Community Gallery through July 31. The exhibit depicts how detained Hawaii residents passed their time behind barbed wire.
