Amplified books
Wave road show

I DIDN'T EVEN leave the island when I took a few days off last week, and yet I still feel like I need another break to recover from my vacation. Why is it always like that?

At least not having to go into the newsroom meant I had more time to play with my new toy, a 20-gigabyte Apple iPod complete with FM transmitter.

It sure was nice to cruise around in my truck listening to new music by the 86 List, Pimpbot and Na Palapalai without having to change a CD.

I've already got 600 songs on my iPod, and let me tell you, Apple's iTunes Music Store is pure evil once they've got you hooked on downloading tracks for 99 cents each ...

THERE WASN'T a great turnout for Mixed Nutz's CD release party Friday night at the Beach House, but that didn't stop the members of Amplified from celebrating once their opening set was pau.

Turns out the band recently signed with indie label Solomon Artistries, and will leave next week for the mainland to record a new album and go on tour. You've got one more chance to check them out live -- head over to the Wave Waikiki this Friday for their final show before hitting the road ...

HAVE YOU been staying away from the W Honolulu's "Wonderlounge" because of the crowds? Now is the time to pay another visit.

Sipping on a $5 Jack and Coke near the bar a few minutes after spotting KHNL's Lisa Kubota, one regular at the weekly party hosted by Komo Low, told me it's been pretty slow ever since Spring Break ended, which means shorter lines at the door and less of a crowd to wade through upstairs ...

BUT IF feeling packed in like a sardine is your idea of a good time on a Friday night, give Club Noblesse a try later in the evening.

The J-Dope party was filled to capacity when I squeezed my way in just after 2 a.m. last weekend, with Doc Rock holding things down on the microphone and DJ Goodvybe on the decks. If you think it gets nuts at Pipeline late at night, you need to see what's going down at Noblesse ...

THE HONEYMOON is over for Singles In Town Magazine's Emily Lopez. After just one issue, Lance Rae has departed as editor of the publication, taking most of the writing staff with him. Lopez called it a "business decision" when reached by phone yesterday, adding that she expects another edition of the magazine to be available on store shelves next week. We'll see ...

AND KEEP an eye out for another local boy on national television this weekend.

Hawaii-born Mark Dacascos will play the role of chairman on "Iron Chef America: Battle of the Masters," which features Mario Batali, Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck taking on Masaharu Morimoto and Hiroyuki Sakai. Check out www.foodnetwork.com for more info ...
