HPR to beam into Waimea
The Big Island town of Waimea will soon join the rest of the state that is able to receive Hawaii Public Radio programming.
On April 13, the Federal Communications Commission approved Hawaii Public Radio's long-standing application to build a translator that will beam HPR's news, fine arts and classical music into the terrain-shielded community.
HPR had applied for a construction permit for the translator last year and was given the requisite $12,000 in equipment by the Earl and Doris Bakken Foundation. The FCC later issued a freeze on granting such applications, preventing the translator's installation until now.
HPR would like to have the equipment running by June, said President Michael Titterton. The organization's two Honolulu stations originate different formats via KHPR-FM 88.1 and KIPO-FM 89.3.
News guild files labor charges
The Hawaii Newspaper Guild has filed unfair labor practice charges against Gannett Pacific Corp., claiming that it illegally disciplined two employees because of their involvement in union activity.
The filing with the National Labor Relations Board in Honolulu was made after the company, which owns the Honolulu Advertiser and Pacific Media Publishing, suspended the guild's PMP unit chairperson Thursday and another active union member on Friday.
