Tillis among 5 cut by Islanders

The Hawaiian Islanders have released last year's backup quarterback and four other players as the arenafootball2 team prepares for Saturday's season-opener against Central Valley at Fresno, Calif.

Quarterback Mike Tillis and the other four players -- wide receiver/defensive back Kamuela Black, fullback/linebacker Marc Riley, wide receiver/defensive back Chris Smith, and wide receiver/linebacker Kyle Thorne -- can now be picked up by other teams or be re-activated by the Islanders.

The Islanders must cut nine more players by today to get to the regular-season roster limit of 21.

Hawaii drops Indiana in water polo

Kristy Bagnall and Beth Novick each scored three goals to lead the sixth-ranked Hawaii water polo team over No. 12 Indiana, 10-8, yesterday in the Aloha Classic.

The Rainbow Wahine (8-8) finished with a 4-1 record in the three-day event at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Hawaii also posted exhibition wins yesterday over New Zealand 1, 7-4, and Japan, 11-8, while defeating Dartmouth, 10-4.

Hawaii returns to the pool this afternoon to take on Canada during the opening day of the Hawaii International Tournament. Also competing in the four-day tournament are Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, Quebec and Seitoku. Admission is free.

Wahine softball tourney rained out

California was declared the champion of the Hawaii Invitational after overnight rains washed out the final day of play yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Golden Bears went 5-0 and were the only undefeated team in the seven-team field. Northwestern and Texas tied for second with 3-1 records, followed by Hawaii (2-3), Tokyo WCPE (1-3), Nittaidai (1-4) and Utah (1-4).

Hawaii plays at the Stanford Classic Thursday through Sunday.

Monroe qualifies for NCAA regionals

Hawaii junior Tasha Monroe became the first Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the NCAA regionals with her long jump during the Rainbow Relays at Cooke Field Saturday.

Monroe had a jump of 5.95 meters, surpassing the regional qualifying mark of 5.93.

Two Cooke Field records were set during the two-day event.

Sanya Richards of Texas, the defending 400-meter NCAA indoor champion, finished in 53.57 seconds in the 400, bettering the time of 54.69 set by Gwen Gardner in 1985. Jerrika Chapple, also of Texas, was timed in 23.44 seconds in the 200 meters, breaking Gwen Loud's 1984 mark of 23.60.
