ELIZABETH H. PENDLETON / 1912-2004

Church founder
helped fight hunger



Elizabeth Henry Pendleton, 91, a co-founder of the Kokokahi Tropical Hunger Mission, died Feb. 2 in Kaneohe.

She was a partner with her late husband, the Rev. Olin B. Pendleton, in organizing and managing the program which has provided agricultural and nutrition training for people from the Pacific Rim for 26 years and continues to aid anti-famine projects in the rural Philippines and Indonesia.

The Pendletons served in Hawaii for more than 40 years and were founders of Kokokahi Church.

She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Christian education. She attended University of Chicago Divi-nity School, where she met Pendleton, and they married in 1937.

They also served congregations of the United Church of Christ in Revere, Mass., Norfolk, Va., and Phoenix.

She is survived by a nephew and niece, Patrick Henry, of Waite Park, Minn., and Gail Henry, of Dallas, and by cousins.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central Union Church Atherton Chapel.
