Imu-licious

Kailua High School is stoking the imu once again and inviting the luau-deprived public to rent space for a tray of kalua pork (or fish, turkey, sweet potatoes or anything else that would benefit from an overnight smoke).

Drop off food from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Feb. 27, and pick up the next day. Cost is $10 per large aluminum tray, which you fill with thawed, seasoned meats and vegetables. Seal well with foil.

Space must be prepaid by Feb. 20. Make checks payable to Kailua High School, attention Todd Hendricks, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua 96734. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope to be mailed a confirmation of your reservation.

Cookie contest

A winning cookie recipe is worth a neighbor island trip in Kakaako Kitchen's "Cookies with Heart" competition.

Recipes are being accepted through Friday. Fax to 596-9114 or e-mail recipe@marketadvantageinc.net. Finalists will be asked to bring a baker's dozen of their cookies for judging at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ward Centre restaurant.

First prize is a neighbor island trip for two. Runners-up will receive gift certificates to 3660 on the Rise and Kakaako Kitchen.

Tasting Paradise

Chefs from 70 Hawaii restaurants share their recipes in "Tasting Paradise III: Restaurants & Recipes of the Hawaiian Islands," the third in author Karen Bacon's combination dining guide/cookbooks.

Published by Coastal Impressions Press, the book sells for $18.95 in bookstores and at many restaurants.

At the market

The Saturday Farmer's Market at Kapiolani Community College is adding monthly cooking demonstrations to its lineup.

Sharon Kobayashi, owner of Latitude 22, hosts the first demonstration, at 9 a.m. Saturday. She will feature items sold at the market in quick and healthy recipes.

Kobayashi and her partner, Ruth Arakaki, are known as "The Oatcake Ladies" for the treats they sell at the farmers' market as well as at stores throughout the islands.

Also Saturday, KCC students will be serving fresh Kula strawberries dipped in Hawaii-grown chocolate from the Big Island. They'll also be selling a breakfast of scrambled eggs, lup cheong taro hash, kalua pork, biscuit, gravy and fresh fruit.

Market hours are 8 a.m. to noon. Call the Hawaii Farm Bureau, 848-2074.

Cooking classes

Knife Basics: Goran Streng, executive chef of the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, explains how to buy, hold, use and sharpen knives, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. next Wednesday, Lyon Arboretum. Practice by cutting and chopping foods for lunch. Cost is $28, $25 for arboretum members. Call 988-0456.

Healthy Cooking Demonstration: Angela Kustasu and Lindi Chun, of the University of Hawaii's Cooperative Extension Service, focus on adding fruits and vegetables to meals, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 19 at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave. Free; sponsored by Hawaii Meals on Wheels.
