Sofa's run ends at Western Regional

In the first round of the Western Boxing Regional in Bakersfield, Calif., Waianae's Kini Sofa showed fans that he can make an opponent pay for making a single mistake.

Yesterday in the second round, the 119-pound Sofa learned that there are those out there who can make him pay as well.

Sofa lost to Rafael Valenzuela of Phoenix, Ariz., when the referee stopped the fight in the second round. The loss ended Sofa's last chance of competing in the Olympic trials.

Mark Diaz, a veteran trainer who was in Sofa's corner for this tournament, said Hawaii's hope was leading the favored Valenzuela when Sofa left his hands a little too high. Valenzuela tagged Sofa with a body shot hard enough to force the referee to check on him. Another body shot to the same spot moments later ended it.

Rainbow Wahine win water polo opener

STOCKTON, Calif. >> The Hawaii women's water polo team opened its 2004 season with a 12-5 win at Pacific last night.

Kristy Bagnall and Shannon Carroll had three goals each for UH, scoring back-to-back with the first goals of the game.

Hawaii softball drops to 1-1 with loss to UAB

Beth Mullins' RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Chelsea McCall with the go-ahead run as Alabama-Birmingham defeated Hawaii 4-3 last night.

Jessica Morton pitched a complete game for the Rainbow Wahine softball team, giving up just one earned run in the loss. Tyleen Tausaga and Tracie Uchima accounted for all of the Wahine's hits with two apiece. Hawaii dropped to 1-1. UABis 1-0.

BYUH, Hilo playing in Nevada:At Henderson, Nev., Brigham Young-Hawaii went 1-1 and Hawaii-Hilo dropped two games yesterday in collegiate softball at the Las Vegas Classic.

BYUH beat Longwood (Va.) 4-3 behind Echo Hatch's complete game, then lost 9-1 to Cal Baptist.

UH-Hilo lost to Minnesota State-Mankato 8-7, then lost 9-8 to Barry when Barry scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
