Asashoryu clinches title


TOKYO >> Yokozuna Asashoryu clinched the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament today, beating ozeki Chiyotaikai by oshidashi (frontal push out).

Asashoryu, who improved to 14-0, clinched despite Kotomitsuki winning. He was the only sumotori who could have caught Asashoryu and forced a playoff.
