Super Sunday, Wie
and ‘katooshens’
SUPER Bowl. The biggest day in sports. The biggest event of the year. Bigger than Christmas. Bigger even than the final episode of "Friends."
Don't be caught unprepared. That's why next week I will be offering the Sidelines guidelines to Super Bowl viewing. Watch for it. And now the news ...
>> Someone summed it up for me last week, so I'll steal his line here: UH football doesn't have a college atmosphere, or even a pro atmosphere.
It has a pro wrestling atmosphere.
>> Another sign of the impact Larry Price's broadcast career has had on everyday life: On the news the other night a source reported that an accident victim was OK except for "a few minor katooshens."
>> After watching her charm the national media last week it's safe to say that Michelle Wie can be a little cocky. Good thing it's cute.
>> And maybe that explains why there has been some backlash to June Jones' cockiness. Not cute enough.
>> Seriously, Wie is a sweet, sweet girl. But there is that little hint of 14-year-old sass there. The kind that plays best with a laugh track. Like on a TV sitcom. Or if, say, a room full of journalists laugh at all your jokes (yeah, I laughed; she's got a great sense of humor and impeccable timing).
It might be slightly less hilarious if it were just you and a "funny" teenager.
>> I'm going to go way out on a limb here and predict that this year's UH football recruiting class will be one of the best in the history of the school.
>> Speaking of recruiting, Utah is back.
>> I like seeing the underdog Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl. But I'm disappointed about the injury to Chunky Soup Man. I was going to base my entire Pro Bowl week on hanging out with the Chunky Soup Man.
>> I love the way JC Carter is playing with the Rainbows. And I give a lot of credit to Riley Wallace for being patient with a guy who makes things happen but is also occasionally too fast for his own good.
In the past Wallace may have yanked a guy immediately for a mistake or two, but here he's got a steady hand and it's paying off. Carter was tremendous Thursday night.
>> Note to self: Get out and see Derrick Low before it's too late.
>> I'm not going to name names here, because if they got away with it they got away with it, but there were a couple of curious absences when UH announced the list of "flagrant" offenders from the big fight. And that's based on scenes actually documented by newspaper photos for everyone to see.
One was a key reserve/probable 2004 starter on top of and apparently pummeling a cowering opponent (maybe he was really giving the guy a hug). Another was a starter and now pro prospect grimacing as he swung his helmet into a Houston guy -- who was otherwise engaged, by the way, and probably never saw it coming -- with full force (hey, for all we know the blow never connected).
Maybe still pictures don't tell the whole story.
>> UH baseball opening with Texas? Great move. Playing one of the games on Super Sunday? Well, let's just say I'll be seeing the Rainbows on Saturday night.
