Aquarium to study
unique seadragons
Star-Bulletin staff
Waikiki Aquarium researchers are collaborating with the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Calif., to study the breeding behavior of two species of seadragon.
The leafy seadragon and the weedy seadragon, relatives of seahorses, have leaf-like appendages on their heads and bodies and are found only in waters of southern Australia.
They are protected by Australia and can be collected and exported only under special permit.
The aquariums in Waikiki and Long Beach have the seadragons on display.
The weedy seadragons at the Waikiki Aquarium were bred for the first time in 2001 by the Aquarium of the Pacific. Another batch was born in August, and the Waikiki Aquarium was presented with some offspring to observe their behavior and growth rate.
