COURTESY RACHEL BARNETTE The glamour of the '30s will be on display at Miller Hall Gallery on the University of Hawaii campus tomorrow through Dec. 11.

The Fashion Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa presents "Glitz and Glamour," Miller Hall Gallery's newest costume collection of 1930s garments and accessories, opening tomorrow.

From Greta Garbo to Clark Gable, Miller Hall Gallery catches the essence of early Hollywood glamour. The exhibit includes bias-cut dresses in luxurious fabrics, furs and tiny hats that complemented the looks, offering no pretense of sun protection.

The Fashion Program's faculty and students will celebrate opening day with a party from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. Attendees are encouraged to "put on the ritz" and wear something related to the 1930s style.

The opening and admission to the gallery are free. The collection will be on display from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays, tomorrow through Dec. 11.

Miller Hall Gallery is one of the UH's best-kept secrets. It's home to one of the largest academic historical costume collections in the United States, built up over 30 years with the support and donations from collectors in the community, according to curator Carol D'Angelo. Call 956-2234.

Neiman Marcus hosts special holiday shows

With the holiday season upon us, Neiman Marcus is hosting a number of trunk shows, designer appearances and other in-store events for a chance to influence your purchases.

This is just a sampling of the events taking place this week and next:

Tomorrow and Saturday

Monday and Tuesday

>> Meet Lizzie Scheck: Meet the designer behind the famous horseshoe necklace made popular by Sarah Jessica Parker in "Sex and the City." Formerly known as part of the designing duo Mia & Lizzie, Scheck now creates fashionably fun jewelry under her solo label. Her collection consists of dainty heart, star and flower motifs, whimsical pieces such as gem-studded flip flips to edgy tattoo-inspired winged hearts. In Designer Jewelry, Level One.

>> Piaget funny heart collection trunk show: View a special collection of fine jewelry and accessories featuring Piaget's signature lopsided "funny heart." In Precious Jewels Salon, Level One.

>> Gucci watch trunk show: View a special collection of Gucci watches for men in Men's Furnishings, Level Three.

Monday to Wednesday

>> Meet Alana Leigh: View the San Francisco artist's collection of freshwater pearl, semi-precious stone and sterling silver jewelry in Designer Jewelry, Level One.

Tuesday

>> Meet designer David Dart between 1 and 3 p.m. Learn his philosophy on creating beautiful and wearable clothing featuring fluid fabrications, soft silhouettes and unique finishing touches. In Sport Shop, Level Two.

>> Icon trunk show: Founded in 1999 by a Hollywood filmmaker and art collector, Icon is known for creating wearable, functional conversation pieces. Icon collections are created from the softest top grain American leather and printed using a permanent process to bond images to leather. Each item is printed with art ranging from works from the world's greatest artists and period advertising art (i.e. Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans) to the icon of freedom -- the American flag. Meet representative Cheryll Tan and view a special collection of printed shoes and accessories. In Ladies Shoes & Designer Handbags, Level One.
