Irons, Dorian win first-round heats in Rip Curl

Andy Irons of Kauai broke his board but recovered to catch enough waves to win his heat yesterday in the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach.

Irons scored a 14.57 to beat fellow Hawaii surfers Kalani Robb (12.6) and Love Hodel (5.93).

Shane Dorian was the only other Hawaii surfer to win his heat, scoring a 13.5 to edge Nathan Hedge of Australia (12.5).

Miano, Helton to talk about Alabama at QB Club

Hawaii defensive backs coach Rich Miano and special teams coach Tyson Helton will join former Iolani and Hawaii quarterback Elroy Chong at the Honolulu Quarterback Club tomorrow.

The buffet lunch begins at 11:30 p.m. with the program to follow at noon.

Singletary to join Jones at Na Koa: Hawaii football coach June Jones will bring defensive line coach Vantz Singletary along to tomorrow's meeting of the Na Koa football club.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center and costs $13 for members and $15 for non-members.

UH-Hilo tops Rider in Hilo Shootout

Ryan Abrahams scored 21 points as Hawaii-Hilo edged Rider 58-56 last night at the round-robin Hilo Shootout.

Justin Griffin scored 16 points for Hawaii-Hilo.

Brigham Young-Hawaii 108, Humboldt State 97: Jake Chrisman scored 29 points and Shawn Opunui added 28 as the Seasiders (4-2) beat the Lumberjacks (3-1).

Adams State 74, Hawaii Pacific 71: Aaron Abrams scored a game-high 19 points but the Sea Warriors (0-5) lost to the Grizzlies (3-2).
