Kahumoku, 5 others earn WAC honors

Tim Chang, Natasha Kai and Krystalynn Ontai weren't the only UH athletes to win Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors yesterday. In fact, they represented only half of those honored.

Two-time All-American Lily Kahumoku, a senior left-side hitter from Lubbock, Texas, was named WAC Volleyball Player of the Week.

Kahumoku's performances in Hawaii road wins over Boise State and UTEP led to her fourth Player of the Week honor and first this year. With two-time WAC Player of the Year Kim Willoughby ailing, Kahumoku averaged 4.83 kills, 3.33 digs and 1.33 blocks per game, and a .479 hitting percentage. She added her seventh double-double of the season against the Miners.

Chang won the award for football while Kai and Ontai won for soccer.

Chen wins for swimming: Hawaii's Yan Chen was named WAC Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after reaching the NCAA's provisional qualifying mark in the 200-yard I.M. at Hawaii's Senior Meet.

Chen, a junior from Da Lian, China, reached the mark after completing the four-stroke sprint in 2 minutes, 2.75 seconds. She also won the 200 free in 1:53.60.

Buchanan runs for award: Hawaii freshman Dana Buchanan and Boise State sophomore Forest Braden were named WAC Athletes of the Week in cross country.

Buchanan, from Beachburg, Ontario, took 16th overall at the five-kilometer Arizona State Invite in 18 minutes, 54 seconds. She has been first amongst Rainbow Wahine in the last two meets.

Tickets available for PGA Grand Slam

Tickets for the 2003 Professional Golfers Association Grand Slam of Golf, held over two days at Poipu Golf Course on Kauai, are now available.

Only the year's four major-championship winners -- Masters champion Mike Weir, U.S. Open winner Jim Furyk, British Open champ Ben Curtis, and PGA Championship victor Shaun Micheel -- need apply, as they are the only four invited to compete by the Pro Golfers Association for the $1 million purse.

It will be the first time that the field for the 36-hole stroke-play tournament is made up of first-time major winners.

A Pro Am tourney will be held the day before the tourney starts. Tickets are $10 for the Pro Am, $20 each for the first and final rounds, and $40 for all three days, and are available by calling 1-800-PGA-TCKT or online at www.PGA.com.

HPU's Karleusa PacWest Player of the Week

Sophomore right-side hitter Nadica Karleusa of Hawaii Pacific (13-2, 5-0 Pacific West Conference) earned PacWest Player of the Week honors after her performances in three wins last week, two 3-0 wins over MSU-Billings and a 3-1 victory over Chaminade.

Karleusa, from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, recorded 46 kills during the week for the 14th-ranked Sea Warriors. She also had a combined .443 hitting percentage, amassed five service aces and had 19 digs for the week.

The Sea Warriors are expected to improve on their ranking when the American Volleyball Coaches Association releases its poll today.
