Kauai field workers ratify new contract
KILAUEA, Kauai >> Field hands who went on strike last week at Guava Kai Plantation ratified a new contract this weekend.
Company officials said they are "reorganizing" in light of the agreement and could not say when the guava harvest would resume.
The 28 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union walked off the job Thursday. A 30-month agreement was reached Friday night, giving them a 3 percent raise retroactive to Jan. 1. The field hands had been working without a contract since Jan. 2.
Maui committee urges Maalaea Harbor fixes
KAHULUI >> An advisory committee on Maui said it will tell Gov. Linda Lingle that Maalaea Harbor needs emergency repairs to electrical fixtures and walkways.
Kalei Sombelon, a member of the governor's Maui Advisory Committee, said Friday that the situation is so bad that the harbor "is a lawsuit waiting to happen."
Committee Chairwoman Madge Schaefer said that when she visited the harbor, she found open junction boxes with exposed wires and some of the wiring grounded to nearby handrails.
Schaefer said she also saw concrete footpaths were worn down to rebar in some places.
If the harbor were a private dock, the county would probably shut it down, Schaefer said.
Carol She, Maui district director of the state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, said electrical needs top the list of needed repairs, but added the division isn't receiving adequate funding to maintain all of the harbors in Maui County.
Meeting set on plan for Kokee State Park
The Division of State Parks will hold a public information meeting on the Kokee/Waimea Canyon State Park master plan and environmental impact statement 5:30 p.m. today at the Lihue Neighborhood Center.
The division is seeking comments on three alternatives for the management of the two parks and to solicit support for a preferred plan that will set the direction for the parks' development for the next 25 years.
Primary issues in the master plan include resource conservation and enhancement, public recreation, disposition of recreational homes, existing water and sewage system constraints, invasive species control, native species enhancement and generating revenue.
Public input will help determine a preferred recommendation to the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

Bank robbery charges pile up for spa fugitive
A bank robbery suspect arrested at a Keeaumoku Street massage parlor Saturday has been charged with holding up three banks.
Police arrested Darren Kaminaka, 36, at 5:10 p.m. Saturday at the China Spa at 825 Keeaumoku St. less than an hour after the Central Pacific Bank at the Kaheka Street Daiei was robbed.
He is charged in that case and is also charged in Thursday's holdup of the Ala Moana branch of American Savings Bank.
He is also charged with Friday's robbery of the Kapahulu branch of First Hawaiian Bank. In all three robberies, the suspect handed a note to a teller indicating he was armed and demanded money.
Kaminaka is being held without bail.
