Honolulu Marathon champion wins in Chicago
Russia's Svetlana Zakharova, a two-time Honolulu Marathon champion, won the Chicago Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 7 seconds to earn $100,000. Combined with her Boston Marathon victory earlier this year and the Honolulu race in December, Zakharova has won over $190,000.
Twenty people with local ties participated in the event, including 10-time Honolulu Marathon Kama'aina winner Jonathan Lyau, who finished in 2:39:26 to place 223rd. The top female finisher from Hawaii was Waimanalo's Kelly Noonan, whose time of 3:50:49 placed her 7,515th.
Other local finishers in the top 1,000 included David Edgar of Waipahu who finished 636th, Honolulu's Mark Houghton who placed 639th, and Waimanalo's Timothy Noonan who placed 843rd.
Six survive Auau Channel
The Auau Channel from Maui to Lanai was crossed successfully for just the second time Saturday, with six local swimmers completing the 9-mile journey.
The group included 60-year-old Carl Kawauchi, Alton Motobu, John Nielson, Bill Costello, Jim Emmons and Billy Brown, who at the age of 25, was the youngest to cross the channel.
Only three of the six swimmers had successfully crossed channels before, with Kawauchi having done it seven times.
Seasiders split in Water Polo tournament
BYU-Hawaii overcome a tough loss to Santa Clara earlier in the day to come back and defeat Bucknell 12-10 in the second game of a water polo doubleheader yesterday.
The first game saw the Seasiders jump out to an early 4-2 lead, but Santa Clara came back to win 9-7 in double overtime. Jordan Brink led the team in scoring with three goals while also adding three steals.
The late game featured Vanja Kalabic, who scored five goals, and Kevin Van Haaster, who added three. With the win, BYU-Hawaii improved to 10-6 on the season.
