Rainbow Wahine still second in national poll

The Hawaii women's volleyball team remained ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll released yesterday.

Defending national champion Southern California (6-0) stayed in the top spot, receiving all 65 first-place votes. Rounding out the top five are Florida (6-1), Stanford (4-1) and Nebraska (5-0).

The Wahine (7-1) will next host the Sprint Hawaii Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Stanford, which lost to Florida last week, opens the tournament with a 5 p.m. match against Weber State (5-2) on Friday. Hawaii takes on Utah State (2-4) in the second match.

Willoughby nets WAC award: Another week, another weekly honor for Kim Willoughby.

The senior hitter for the Hawaii women's volleyball team earned her second Player of the Week honor from the Western Athletic Conference yesterday. Last week, Willoughby helped the Wahine to a 4-0 record and was named the MVP for both the Hawaiian Airlines Classic and the Aston Imua Challenge.

Sagara signs on as Hilo assistant

Brendan Sagara has been hired as an assistant baseball coach by the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans. He will be in charge of the pitchers and catchers.

Sagara has coached in the independent Frontier League the past three summers. He pitched four seasons for head coach Joey Estrella after graduating from Leilehua. Sagara's eight victories in 1996 are the most by a Vulcan pitcher since UHH went to Division I.

He also has written a weekly column about life in the minor leagues for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin the last three summers.

"I'm excited to be able to go back and help out the coach that was my mentor. I hope that I can do what coach Estrella did for me which was to teach me the game of baseball and how to be a better person," Sagara said.

Barnett, Hill added to Hula Bowl staffs

Colorado's Gary Barnett and San Jose State's Fitz Hill were named assistant coaches for the 2004 Hula Bowl yesterday.

Barnett came to prominence as head coach at Northwestern and took over at Colorado in 1999. He led the Buffaloes to the Big 12 championship in 2001 and Northern Division titles in 2001 and '02. Hill is in his third season at San Jose State and led the Spartans to a 6-7 record last year.

Ohio State's Jim Tressel and Maryland's Ralph Friedgen were previously named the head coaches for the Hula Bowl, set for Jan. 17, 2004 at Maui's War Memorial Stadium.

Lynch leads AT&T Stroke-Play Championship

John Lynch shot a 2-under par 70 yesterday to take lead after the first round of the 13th AT&T Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island.

In the senior division, Ron Castillo Sr. and Mike Iyoki share the lead with opening round scores of 73. Defending senior champion Larry Stubblefield is one shot off the lead at 2-over par 74.

The 54-hole tournament featuring 52 professionals from around the state concludes tomorrow. The players are competing for a total purse of $20,200.

Brigham Young-Hawaii middle blocker Chun Yi Lin has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week.

Lin, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Taiwan, helped No. 7 BYU-Hawaii to wins over an NCAA Division I squad and two higher-ranked NCAA Division II opponents with three 20-plus kill performances.
