Party goes on for
ace king Douglas Kim

DOUGLAS Kim has always been a good excuse to throw a party.

I first wrote about Kim on Dec. 16, 2001. We called him the "Ace of Aces." He'd just sunk his 15th hole-in-one. But the story was about the party.

Kim and his kolohe retired golf buddies got together after every ace, to eat and talk story. It was a wonderful makeshift backyard clubhouse, only a few hundred yards from the golf course. Only a few hundred more from the sea.

It was the best four hours I'd ever "worked."

Douglas Kim always seemed to have another ace in him, and then it was time to cook rice, and shrimp and chicken, to get the beer and soda from the fridge. To set up chairs around the table, telling tales of days gone by.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear a week or so later, from an astute reader, that that rascal was even older than he'd let on.

I was saddened to hear, a few short months after that, that Douglas Kim had died.

I'm looking at that picture of him now, the one George Lee shot, Kim sitting there laughing, surrounded by friends.

They're doing it again, all his kolohe golf buddies. They'll play a tournament in memory of Kim on Aug. 26 at Kahuku.

"That course," says friend Roy Kimura, "was Doug's home course."

He made 12 holes-in-one at Kahuku.

Twenty-four of his friends will be playing. Then it will be time for the party. Another of those famous Douglas Kim hole-in-one lunches.

But this one will be more formal, the official Douglas Kim memorial tournament.

They won't be at the old clubhouse. They'll meet at Laie Chop Suey, and talk story about old friends, and days gone by.

>> Dear Sports Columnist: "Do you think that the Wahine are going to have two setters playing ... again?

"One Local Player vs. One from the Mainland -- like Jen Carey and Margaret Vakasausau -- all over again? Dave Shoji says there will only be ONE starter and the OTHER will be a BACKUP.

"I know that Kanoe (Kamana'o) plays really well in the back row ... (also heard that Robyn Ah Mow was teaching her "tricks of the trade." Is that really fair???)

"Do YOU think that Kanoe is a lot like Robyn Ah Mow?"

COMMENT: And I thought I was excited about Wahine volleyball season ...

>> "You sure you don't mean subdural instead of subdermal hematoma? The former means a clot beneath the dura (inside the cranium) whereas the latter means below the dermis (part of the skin). Just a tad of difference. Ha!"

COMMENT: Four years of med school, down the drain ...
