Wahine earn No. 2 preseason ranking

The Hawaii women's volleyball team was ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/AVCA Division I preseason Top 25 poll released yesterday.

The Wahine, who lost in the national semifinals last December, received one first-place vote and 1,518 points. Defending national champion Southern Cal received the remaining 64 first-place votes.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Florida, Stanford, Pepperdine, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, UC Santa Barbara and Arizona. Hawaii was the only Western Athletic Conference in the Top 25 although Fresno State received seven votes for 43rd place.

BYU-Hawaii favored to win PacWest volleyball.

Defending national and Pacific West champion Brigham Young-Hawaii was a unanimous choice to repeat as conference volleyball champion in a vote by the six head coaches.

The Seasiders opened last year unranked but went on to win the program's 10th national title, finishing 9-1 in PacWest play and 27-2 overall. Oahu rivals Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade were ranked 2-3 after finishing 6-4 in PacWest play. Rounding out the poll are Western New Mexico, Hawaii Hilo and Montana State-Billings.

Limoz, Kim to take on Thais in September

Local boxers Teddy Limoz and Dustin Kim have signed on to take on another pair of Thai fighters Sept. 5 at the Blaisdell arena.

Limoz (10-1, 9 Kos) will not be putting his World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific welterweight title on the line in his 10 round affair. Limoz defended the belt with a second round knockout of Wat Vor Wutinun of Thailand at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballroom June 17. Kim beat Orose Muengpimile by decision in the co-main event of that card. Kim is 19-5 but has never lost in five fights in Hawaii.

Rodney Joseph of Waianae and Sarina Sojot are also on the card, event promotor Tom Moffatt said.
