HPU opens high-tech
facility downtown

The $2 million center includes
software and communications labs

Hawaii Pacific University students and faculty will have access to high-technology classrooms and laboratories this fall with the opening last week of the nearly $2 million Frear Center.

The 4,500-square-foot facility at 1132 Bishop St. features classrooms and laboratories, including a hardware and telecommunications lab, a software engineering lab and a systems lab.

The center also incorporates an existing 8,000-square-foot wing that was built in 1998 for $1.2 million. The wing will house additional classrooms specifically equipped with instructional technology, and administrative offices.

The facility was funded by a $600,000 grant from the Frear Eleemosynary Trust and contributions from the community.

The grant is one of the largest given by the 65-year-old charitable trust, which was established to serve religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes.

The center will offer opportunities for students and faculty who wish to create and study complex systems in mobile and wireless technologies, fiber optics and sophisticated software.

HPU is the state's largest private university, with almost 9,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.
